Lynn, Aline and I were very excited to arrive in Austin on Saturday for the ASIST conference. Sessions started on Sunday with a great morning of papers and posters on search, SEO, and emphasizing user involvement. Here are the highlights:
- Many people don't like RSS and find it too overwhelming--but those who do like RSS can't live without it
- People prefer to monitor page updates via email--all they need to know is that the page has changed; they don't need to know what has changed
- Social interaction online is increasing, but findings have shown that younger audiences see the Internet as a tool to make connections; they still prefer human interaction
- When searching, stored queries were found to be very useful among users
- In an analysis of Dogpile.com, 69% of those did not look beyond the first page of results
- Searchers have a very short interaction time with search engines; session lengths are short and most of their time is spent looking at the results
- 62% of searchers use only 1 or 2 words in their query
Some books being talked about:
Smart Mobs
Law, Legislation, and Liberty
The World is Flat
